Measure the journey before optimizing the button

Clicks alone do not explain intent. A better funnel separates page views, engaged reading, CTA exposure, outbound intent, and confirmed destination events.

If a page gets 10,000 visits and 400 outbound clicks, the number 400 is not enough to explain what happened.

Useful stages to measure

A practical content-to-destination funnel can include:

  • page view,
  • meaningful read depth or dwell time,
  • CTA viewed,
  • CTA clicked,
  • transition layer shown,
  • destination opened.

The goal is not to track everything. The goal is to separate content quality from button performance.

Why this matters

If visitors never reach the CTA, changing button color will not solve the problem. If they reach it but rarely click, the recommendation or offer may be weak. If they click and abandon during a transition step, the friction is probably too high.

Measurement should help answer those different questions without turning the site into a surveillance project.
